RoboVap - automatic enrichment of water samples

According to the EU Water Framework Directive, selected organic trace substances are monitored in surface waters in order to improve the quality of these waters in the EU. However, the environmental quality standards set for this purpose sometimes have such low limit values that they cannot always be achieved even with very sensitive methods such as LC-MS/MS via direct injection.

Enrichment methods based on solid phases (SPE), which are therefore often used in analytical laboratories, have the disadvantage of often not being non-discriminatory.

Together with our project partner IWW Water Centre (Mülheim), we have therefore developed a concentration process using microwave technology, which concentrates a water sample of approx. 70 ml to a few ml. With the RoboVap, our sample preparation system consisting of the microwave Discover (CEM) and a 4-axis SCARA robot, all steps up to the sample application can be automated. Such enriched water sample can then be analyzed e.g. by LC-MS/MS with very good reproducibility. For more information, please visit us at analytica 2022 and contact us via our contact form.
