Online HPLC monitor offers biotechnological process control

The developers and users of biotechnological manufacturing processes are increasingly faced with the task of making processes as effective as possible. To this end, yields and quality must be constantly optimized to ensure safe products and to advance into price segments that are competitive against the petrochemical alternatives.

With our new online UHPLC monitor, we offer an analysis system that can take and analyze samples at different points in cultivation processes. In cooperation with TRACE Analytics, sterile sampling was implemented with the TRACE module and automated by SIM. The entire process thus runs automatically up to the transfer of data to the process control system via the OPC UA communication standard. Through cooperation with project partners, the UHPLC monitor has already been used to monitor the product concentration (tested in the process for insulin production) and the substrates (test for monitoring amino acid concentrations during cultivation for the production of monoclonal antibodies).

The idea for the development of an online UHPLC monitor came from the Knowledge-based Process Intelligence (WiPro), an alliance of industry, SMEs and research. The goal of the research alliance was to build knowledge-based process intelligence and thus contribute to more stable processes in bioproduction.
